About Adam Bailey
I’m a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique, with a private practice both in Cambridge and in Maynard, MA. I have twenty years of experience with the Alexander Technique, fourteen years as a teacher. I work with all of the groups listed under “Who Can Benefit from the Alexander Technique?” in the Questions and Answers section.
I do have two areas of specialization, however. First, with some clients I employ a combination of the Alexander Technique and counseling-oriented bodywork. I hold a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and for ten years I taught psychology at the college and high school levels. Moreover, I find that in some cases the Alexander Technique can play an important role in psychological growth. To find out more about this aspect of the technique, go here.
In general, in weaving together my various backgrounds, my hope is to create a safe, warm environment for my Alexander students -- and especially for those for whom the process has emotional ramifications.
Second, I specialize in working with athletes - and especially with horseback riders and skiers. In the two latter cases, I teach a combination of the sport and the Alexander Technique. I’ve been riding since I was six, and skiing since I was nine. If you would like to find out more about my sports background and the way I teach skiing, go here. If you would like to find out more about the relationship between the Alexander Technique and horseback riding, go here.
I’d like to end this brief biography on a more personal note. First, I consider myself blessed to be able to support myself doing work that I love. The Alexander Technique gives me a profound sense of well-being and calm; invariably I feel better after I’ve been teaching. And finally (but not least!), I got married in October of 1998. My wife is a riding instructor and horse trainer. It might be of interest to riders that, as part of our wedding, we did a “pas de deux” on horseback – a choreographed “dance” for two horses and riders, set to music.
